I don't know. Do females of the domestic cat's immediate evolutionary forerunners, the African sand cat (Felis lybica) and the European wildcat (Felis sylvestris) become extremely loud and obnoxious when in estrus? Humans have been rewarding, in terms of opportunities for reproduction, that particular behavior ("Holy shit, put that fluffin' cat outside, I can't stand any more of this yowling") for millenia. I hypothesize that humans have, entirely unintentionally, bred them selectively for exactly that.
