The more sporty models of the era evoke the sense of optimism from the era. If one's mental headspace is situated in the 80s, the advancement in cars seen at the time was, in the human psyche, greater than that achieved in the past 3 decades. Fuel injection, catalytic conversion, turbocharging, ABS, OBD, all made possible by cheapening semiconductors. And computers had yet to become The Great Satan yet. There were desirous reasons to want to avoid them at the time.
